It is the poor management that is the reason we are still having to be shut down. We don’t have the testing, the steady decline in numbers, the contact tracing, the PPE, the hand sanitizer, even cotton swabs that we need to re-open. We have squandered this time bickering over who has authority over what and who is responsible for this and whose fault is that, and who needs to pay for this and that, and whether an action that will help will appear to socialist, instead of marching into battle as a united front and found what we need to do in order to recover.

For so many decades we were the world’s leader in everything, we were who the world looked to for guidance. now we have citizens tying t-shirts around their faces and nurses Googling “how to sanitize a disposable mask”. I don’t feel like we have gained any ground at all really.

Re-opening should not about picking a lesser evil, it should be about coming up with a plan, a real plan, and doing whatever it takes to make sure every state in this supposed Union, has what they need to re-open so that we can stay re-opened.

We now have 5000 meat processing plant workers out of work due to either testing positive or those who haven’t been tested on quarantine due to exposure. If we don’t get this virus under control it doesn’t matter what we do or don’t do about opening bowling alleys. The head of their union said they can’t even now months later get tests for their workers. What good is reopening restaurants if we have food shortages because all the migrant workers who pick our crops are either sick or afraid to work and infect their families? We need to get our butts in gear if we have any hope of saving this country.

As others have said, this is not an economic crisis it’s a health crisis. Not meaning one is more important but rather taking care of the health crisis will result in the economy getting better. It doesn’t work the other way around.

Does anyone know if businesses can be held liable lawsuit-wise if an outbreak is traced to someone’s nail salon or gym?
Saw the stroke story in the Washington Post, but I'm getting sick of these stories that magnify a very small number of cases. It said there were a couple dozen stroke cases among covid19 positive people in New York. The NEJoM article is going to about five cases.

Okay, so there have been 50k deaths and so far we know of a handful of young people who have died of stroke due to covid19 blood clotting.

The media is in full-on disaster porn mode.

Georgia right now is 100% vindicated. You can go to the beach, gym, and get a haircut.

Good on them for not letting fear control their life.

I don't think this is one of those cases being blown out of proportion. They just recently noticed this pattern, and it is very real. We have a doctor who posts on the NJ forum, AnesthesiaMD, who confirmed they are seeing this and have even had to amputate limbs from this virus. If you read the articles, I think you will see this is a new and pretty real concern. Read it on a science/medicine site if you don't trust any normal sources. There is a lot still we do not know about this virus.

They aren't vindicated until we see if it results in a big uptick in cases, and that information is several weeks away. If it doesn't, they will be vindicated but we don't know that yet.

I saw an NYT article about a Broadway star, about 40yo, having to have his leg amputated. A blood clot issue I think. Tragic.

Of course it's a concern, but we should really be putting it in context.

Overall, I think we are going to have to just adjust to this new level of risk. We had things like Polio, TB, AIDS, ravage populations and it really sucked, but we couldn't just stop the world for them.

Personally I think we should continue stay-at-home until June 1st, but at that point we have to open back up and take our chances. We can't cure this, and the more I read about coronaviruses and vaccines, the less confident I am that we'll ever make a vaccine for it. Hopefully at least we can vaccinate against the worst strains. We are going to have to learn to live with this, like we lived with TB, etc...

I have been getting most of my news from the NYT and Daily Mail throughout all this. DM will highlight any young person who dies, even though it may be 1/500 or something in their 30s who die. When that one person who comes up snake eyes goes, DM does a front page story to scare folks. People then reply about how lethal it is without diving into the actual statistics and controlling for age and other issues.

Not saying to minimize it and take plenty of precautions - with that said, it's not something lethal like ebola.

The statistics are already in, the virus is not as deadly as we thought it was. Upticks don’t matter. Sweden has already shown that. The more testing you do, the lower the death rate becomes.

Based on fearmongering, this virus should be devastating all of Africa and India but it’s not.

It’s ok to accept that society cut off a foot to treat an ingrown toenail. America, and the world, will be back to work long before any vaccine is available, if one even becomes available.

I don't think we have enough info to determine the extent of the spread there.

Can everyone stop quoting Sweden as if they truly understand what's going on there?

Even though Sweden hasn't done lockdowns, they're still doing social distancing measures. More than 50% of Swedish households are one-person households. It's not an apples-to-apples comparison to very many places.

Blood clotting problems CV-19 patients sometimes suffer was seen months ago in China.

Docs. here have been prescribing the clotbusting drug tPA for some CV-19 patients for a good while.
