I don't understand why they don't pump it down almost empty oil wells in Texas. They even have pipelines all the way to the well heads. If they can get free oil, anything they recover later will be gravy.

You’d think with untold billions being lost if your suggestion was that easy they’d probably be doing it no?
"Hey, I know how to make money! We'll take this oil out of the ground here and put it right back in the ground over there! And then we can make even more money when we move it from over there back over here! Shee-it, I haven't had a business idea this brilliant since I dug a hole next to a hole to get dirt to fill the first hole!"
Or, you could skip the middle step between taking the oil out of the ground and putting the oil back in the ground by simply leaving it in the ground. Maybe now that oil is so cheap they literally can only barely give it away, domestic producers will finally get the hint to do just that for a while.

I am not a geologist, but I think it may have something to do with the fact that a depleted oil reservoir is not "empty". The porous rock still contains oil (and water) - just not at a sufficient pressure to continue forcing oil through the well to the surface. They do store natural gas in depleted reservoirs, but gas is more compressible than liquids which I would think makes a difference with how much you can inject at maximum allowable pressure.
