To put it politely, you're completely missing the point. UBI is not some kind of uber-welfare. Until you shake that idea and see it in the larger context of how it works, you're going to be trapped in...

...well, to put it impolitely, the basic self-serving stupidity of most Americans. Who tend to cling to truisms and beliefs but haven't really matched with reality for a very long time. Including their own reality, such as believing they somehow got where they are without no help from nobody. Oh yeah, and that anybody can do that, because everybody in their family did it in 1962.

But your other comments indicate that you're getting there.

Yeah, but I can imagine all the rhetoric pretty easily - about how all UBI would do is pay losers to get high on drugs on the taxpayer dime, etc.., etc..,

About the only benefit suite that Americans approve of are military/veteran benefits... ironically even when they themselves are or have been beneficiaries of various goverment support, they argue against it. I have a hard time seeing UBI as a political win anytime soon.

How would you rank the chances of giving everyone $1200 on a few weeks notice?

This isn't and won't be about political viability in anything like the current setting.

Is that how Jeff Bezos will spend his stipend --- good to know. And here I thought he might reinvest it in say --- business expansion.
