Yesterday my wife joked about a wad of paper bills in her wallet that have been there since March and I realized that I hadn’t touched the $60 in my wallet for at least that long. Is paper money dead?

Try going to garage/yard sales with checks or cards. Around here, you won't make any purchases if you don't have cash.
Try buying something from craig's list or Facebook Marketplace. Cash is king!

I tap the ATM for some cash (usually $80) nearly every week. It disappears from my wallet with astonishing rapidity!

I bought a 1972 NYT cookbook at an antiques store with a $20. bill last Sunday.

There is a fishing shop in my town. The old curmudgeon that owns it only takes cash. Also, the local dispensary only takes cash. I have no problem using cash.

I use cash all the time unless I am traveling on business. I try to frequent small businesses and hate to stick it to them by handing them a CC or debit. Also, most of my favorite restaurants in the area I live only accept cash.

Paper money is definitely not dead, but I try to use it as little as possible. I mainly use CC and get cash back rewards (I pay the statement balance, of course). I do carry around some cash for situations where it's the only payment option.

I usually offer small businesses "Paper or Plastic?"

Small folks usually prefer Cash.

Using the VISA systems generally costs merchants at least 1% up to 3 or 4%.

So small businesses seem to prefer Cash.
