You have to be organized to shop in a store, not online. You have to figure out everything you need, when you need it, and make sure you don't forget anything when you go.
With online shopping you just click buttons for what you need, as you need it.
If it was so damn hard and expensive to buy groceries online, I would never step foot in another store.
No. Most people can’t wait a day or even half a day for something to show up at their door. They need to go to the store so they can get it NOW so they can work on the project around their house that weekend of bake that birthday cake for later that afternoon.
I am pleased to do self checkout at Home Depot, Frys, and Sam's Club.

Thank you for letting me get out of the store faster while you (and people like you) wait on line for the cashier to do what he/she gets paid to do.
Too many stupid people go to Walmart for this to ever work. The pilot program will demonstrate this. Also, many Walmart workers will not use self check out because one error will result in immediate termination, so they feel better using the cashier.
High labor costs will always result in less demand for labor. Now that automation can replace labor, things like $15/hour labor costs will result in mass layoffs replaced by automation.
When labor is cheap, it costs more to maintain the automation, so you just higher more labor. It has been a long time since labor was cheap in America.
Three words: Universal Basic Income ($1,000 a month) for all citizens making less then $75,000 a year or $100,000 a year in higher COL areas like the Tri-State area or San Francisco Bay area.

I see more and more people dine in supermarkets,they have an area set up for dining,just no waiters.so no tipping
I shop at Walmart for groceries. If I could order groceries online and have them delivered free, I would never ever step foot in that awful store again, especially right now. Just try buying groceries online. It's an expensive nightmare, and there is no reason it should be any more expensive then buying other items online. You just about have to use an expensive service like Instacart to get groceries delivered, if that is even available in your area. When groceries become available online for the same price they are in stores, grocery stores will start closing down just like other stores.
I don't think grocery stores will ever completely close down. Many people like picking out their own produce & meats.

I used to be really leery of self-check out. But once I started doing it, I fell in love with it.
I don't have to "small talk" some cashier or fellow customer about the weather or their problems. I can check out at my own pace. I don't put the milk on top of my eggs. I don't put the ice cream next to my bananas. I don't put the bricks on top of my lightbulbs.
