Air travel is here to stay. When has the mobility of society ever regressed? They faced challenges in the past too. We might see a short term decline in air travel, but after the crude bubble bursts and more efficient planes are developed, people will be able to continue their globe trotting ways.
And remember, if high speed rail ever becomes the alternative, you are going to have the exact same hassles that we have at the airport now.
Recovering the cost of construction and operations, unless it is heavily subsidized with tax dollars like commuter rail.

I don't think the conversation is dealing with hassles or convenience. I think the topic is where things are headed given rising gas prices.
They will have no choice but to raise fares and cut flights. So instead of 18 non-stops from Dallas to Houston for $79 there will be only 5-6 non-stops for $189.
I don't see any other way for the airlines to absorb the rising cost of gas.
