And a consequence of raising minimum wage. Raising minimum wage to a "decent living wage" is all warm and fuzzy if it happens in a vacuum and nothing else changes, but one thing that DOES happen is that employers find ways to automate.
CafeX was actually founded in 2015; the three SF locations opened 2016/2017 - and have since closed (since about January). Refunds were being offered earlier in the year for prepaid app credits.
There was a shift to (continue to) develop (and improve upon) the concept and bring the 'kiosks' into airports. There is now an 'updated' version located in the SF Airport (Terminal 3). Another one went in at Mineta as well. That said, last I knew, both were temporarily closed due to the pandemic.
The cost of the robot it probably more than you pay someone earning minimum wage for a year, not to mention the more moving parts the quicker it will need to be serviced. Looking at it, it takes up quite a bit of floor space. Imagine for a minute nothing but robot vending machines at your local coffee shop, how many can your fit in it, 3? 4? Not to mention someone's going to have to refill the cups, coffee, cleaning etc. Nice gimmick, but I don't see a serious market for it. If it was like one of the coke vending machines you see at fast food restaurants, it could be profitable, they take a up a lot less floor space and fewer moving parts.
