Except medical education is kind of ridiculous. What is the purpose of 24 hour shifts? It can cause dangerous mistakes.

We probably need more almost-physicians (nurse practitioners, etc.)

Technically they are already doctors when interns since already graduated from Medical school. Internship is post education training, after complete medical school - Interns are normally in rotation for choosing a specialty. Residents are those that continue on for training/certification for a specialty.

There is currently a limit for max 80 hrs a week. There was a cap limiting shifts to 16 hrs that was recently changed to 28 hrs - 24 plus 4 hr overlap - memo - for patient care reasons.

There are other professions that must make critical decisions without much sleep such as military in battle.

Per current GME rules the max. work week is 80 hours with max planned shifts of 30 hours, my DIL has worked many 28 hour planned shifts that became 32-35 hours shifts, sometimes she'll have two 28 hour shifts in one week. Also the 80 hours does not included study time, time for tests or time for research.

??? Why do you think that is different than for a DR?

Also not universally true, I never saw them used and I only did a little over 30 years in the military.

In combat they have been used. Maybe no more since they now have Modafinil.
