[font=Verdana]A very thorough study found that only 3.5% of the unemployed turn down job offers due to UI benefits.
$300 is too small of a disincentive to keep people on the couch.
There is a difference between
"Only 3.5% of the unemployed turned down job offers due to UI benefits"
-- and --
"XX% of the unemployed do not bother to apply for jobs due to the lavash UI benefits they enjoy."

You still don’t get it don’t you? Low wage earners have learned that you can live much better doing some gigs on your own time. I’d don’t blame them.....life is much better when you live it on your own terms.
Uber, Postmates, Amazon Flex, Amazon Relay are just a few that I found searching online. YouTube is full of videos how you can rent a straight truck from Penske or Enterprise and work for yourself with minimal $$$$ investment. Young people are moving into vans and SUV’s and don’t want to be a debt slaves, working just to pay rent or someone's else mortgage. Others are moving overseas where everything is cheap and do work and live lifestyle as a digital nomads. They don’t miss overinflated housing prices and rents in America at all.
Some of them have finally realized that the stock market is rigged or fixed in upper position so even Uber Drivers now are invested in stocks. Besides some young teenagers no one wants to work for someone else anymore and waste his time.
Pilgrim’s Pride (poultry processor): $1,500 signing bonus
Harrison Poultry: $2,500 signing bonus (paid out over a year)
Burger King: $1,500 hiring bonus at one location in Latrobe, PA
A Charlotte pest-control job: $1,200 bonus.
A Gulfport diesel mechanic: $1,500 bonus.
A forklift operator job in Gainesville, Ga.: $2,000 bonus.
etc.
Wow, pretty pathetic that you have to actually bribe people to take a job. This pandemic has really shown just how many deadbeats we have in this country. Meanwhile, the people that actually went to work every day and contributed to this country, get no bonus.

Or, to put it another way, if $300 is enough to keep someone home, then their wages were too low.
If employers feel the need to pay $1,000 signing bonuses, that's the free market at work. Supply and demand.
It's not just the EXTRA $300. That works out to $7.50 an hour at 40 hours a week. Add that to the regular, state unemployment. Varies by state, but lets say another $300 an hour or another $7.50 per hour, so $15 an hour total. On top of that, we have the idiotic "eviction moratorium" where useless deadbeats lived free on the backs of their landlords for a year and a half. We are rewarding deadbeats, and punishing our productive members of society. The ones who actually show up for work, pay for their own cars/gas to get there, that pay for their own housing.

Pretty pathetic that you have to pay people to work? Obviously what was offered was not enough so they try to offer a bonus instead of benefits and/or better work hours and conditions than other potential employers

This entire thread indicates that there are many Americans who would prefer some kind of labor system similar to peasantry or slavery.
Every credible econometric model of the US economy shows that immigration has a positive contribution & multiplier on GDP.
I’m fine with legal immigration of people who over time assimilate. What we can’t afford is to bring in an entire underclass who don’t speak English nor value the same things as Americans such as the rule of law etc. Allowing an open border to increase the labor pool will have horrible consequences especially for those current Americans in those jobs. If you do away with the labor shortage, then you also make it more of an employer’s market, meaning the bonuses and higher wages go buy buy. Controlled, legal immigration all day long. I don’t think it’s too much too ask of immigrants to obey our laws.

How so? The Democrat’s open border will lead to that. Millions of non English speaking people who can be taken advantage of. It has already happened. Plus, you enlarge the labor pool and that puts downward pressure on wages and other benefits. This says nothing of the increase in human trafficking with an open border like many democrats seem to be fighting for. Controlled, legal immigration all day every day.
I for one am happy to see a small labor shortage. It’s about time employers had to think a bit more about what they are offering employees. Open border of labor supply removes that.
