I used to to prep like that, assuming that my gold and silver coins would be of infinite value should fiat currency collapse or become highly devalued; or should some war or mass corona discharge take out electronic forms of banking.
But it just didn't seem to be a practical application, for in the event of global crises; food will have more value.
Gold and silver only have value when everything else is in abundant supply, even the Roman empire paid their soldiers with food and even salt/spices during times of shortages; when they were normally paid in silver coin.
China is currently hoarding food, as they understand history quite well.

Money in some form or another will likely always be relevant. Silver and gold are the best and most honest forms of money.
LOL, I prefer to think of it, as a diversified portfolio!
EDIT~ I realize this thread is pre-dominantly about gold/silver, but one other element might be brought in, now that this thread has swerved into "prepper" content. That being Pb. This is actually a good element to have.
With "Pb" you can amass Au & Ag...along with just about everything else....

currency,gold,silver are stores of value.
but you cannot force me to sell you a dozen of eggs with your gold coin if I would rather have a chocolate bar instead,or a bottle of aspirin past expiration date.

This may be off the topic, remember one of the Rockefellers was killed and eaten by some natives on one of the islands off Australia.
The Rockefeller family finally got word that a local has 2 human skulls in his home, one is a white man,so they sent an Australian to exchange that skull with a small motor boat and fuel, sent the skull to the lab and it was confirmed that it belonged to their son.
To be money , gold needs to easily be exchanged ….that may have been true back in the old days when people dealt in cold coins but not today …
Try to get change from a gold bar after buying a loaf of bread ….
Good luck getting a store to take it or anyone to take it for that matter
He might get a vehicle for a gold bar though.
