I see that the US is still adding a large number of jobs, but I am genuinely confused because I was under the impression that the vast majority of jobs were being automated. Self-driving cars are becoming more advanced, stores are switching to self-checkout, drones are delivering packages and most manufacturing jobs are already automated. Where exactly are all these jobs being created?

I see retail stores posting help wanted-car repair,restaurants,supermarket,Home Depot,Kroger.
these openings could be replacement as workers retired, sick or have to stay home to take care of kids.
Hospitals need workers BAD.

You know at our local supermarket, they have self check out,but there is always one clerk running around overseeing the progress,if you have coupons, you have to turn them over to the clerk .
They can lock up the wheels of the shopping cart in case someone try to bypass check out and getaway free,it happens to me twice, last time I can hardly push my cart once I left the store, and they hired a kid just to transfer my bags to another cart which is not locked. in the parking lot .
This is going to turn some shoppers off, after you paid, you are treated as thief

You don't say?

As myself and several other knowledgeable posters repeatedly pointed out, automation is effectively nothing happening very slowly.

Automation is a long-term process. 10 years is not long-term. Neither is 20 years.

The rate of job growth will always out-pace the rate of automation.

Automation creates more jobs than it eliminates.

Yes, 3 robot welders replace 3 welders but it creates 4 jobs so you have a net-gain of +1 jobs.

The uneducated and uninformed don't understand that.

In that case, automation also isnt really cheaper than manpower.

Take a job off a skilled worker, create another job driving a desk, or watching the machines.

I knew someone, that worked at a bottle factory that had been automated, but after automation, the same workers that had done the work previously, had to be employed to watch the machines. It took the company ages to realize, that the "workers" were "working" 24 hours a day. Good pay for sleeping.
