I don't think prices at the pump will drop. They'll probably just stay where they are. Why go back to 2-3 dollar a gallon gas when people will pay $4 for it? Sure people are driving less but people still need to drive to work. Why not get 4 dollars or so out of people if you can?
Because in an attempt to get a few more in sales volume, a competing gas company will lower their prices (and so on). To pull that off you would have to form a cartel among US gas companies, and not get caught doing it by the feds.
