"One reason consumer spending is down-everybody has so much stuff, there's no place to put it all."

Yes one very small reason. I got laid off 3x in the last 11 years, so my last 11 years have been spent mostly trying to get a decent position.

I am way behind on putting money into retirement investments because of the layoffs and our dreams of putting my kids through a community / local college are mostly dashed.

My main concerns now are:

1. jobs - decent ones where you can get access to a 401K - and that you can make over $10 per hour. The competition for those is so fierce! And the companies hiring are much pickier than they need to be to fill them because they know they can get another candidate in a heartbeat.

2. Cost of medical - ridiculous. Even a trip to the dentist costs us $200 these days. Actually dental costs are worse than medical cause dental insurance is lame, the insurance doesn't want to pay for anything.

3. Food cost - yikes. Yes shopping at the discount grocery store helps, but some of their food sold there is pretty terrible.

4. Fuel and energy costs of course.

There are numerous reasons for all this disarray, and I don't know who caused it, but I have a sneaking suspicion it has to do with the actions / inactions of politicians of both parties and their catering to special interest groups.

I agree with Wild Style, The system from top to bottom is inherently flawed, and that is why voting for Frank Zappa like 5chevin5, makes as much sense as voting for Obama or George McCain.

I will take a chance and choose Barr/Root for the job. They can't be any worse than the clowns we have now.

have we forgotten that this government is spending 3 billion dollars of our money every week on this war in iraq, with no benefit to us whatsoever, with no end in site? it's not about liberal or conservative at this point, that's been reduced to nothing more than a word game. it's about the loss of our representative democracy. it's about our money being sucking into the hands of a few. it's about our governmental system of 'by the people for the people' being reduced to outright fraud. did anyone watch the palin speech last night? we should all be insulted how they talk to us like dumb children. this is the level of politics in this country. it's a joke. if we don't start to look past this left/right nonsense, open our eyes to the big picture and see what is really going on, and take back this country very soon, we are all in big trouble.

We're rich remember? and of course we're not in a recession ... And America is all giving... except to her own people. Silly logic.
