You would think after so many years of building cars they would have learned how to build a good, reliable, and economical vehicle. Guess not. Looks like they are heading toward bankruptcy. Any thoughts? What happens to all those pensions that won't be insured because there isn't going to be enough money?

Fueled by cheap oil (word play)..they built big SUV's and gas guzzlers for the US.

They should have diversified and retooled their manufacturing like Toyota and Honda did.
The dinosaurs didn't live forever you know.

nicely stated by happytexan.... this is what happens when you're not proactive to an evolving marketplace... expensive gas doesn't mesh with hummers, suburbans, and GM trucks!

Yeah I know. For years we've heard "Buy American". Why? We build crap just as good as anyone else.

I wouldn't bet against GM going BK. Nor would I bet against F going BK either. The foreign competition is too strong from overseas and our products are generally inferior to most of the competitors. US car makers are burdened by employee medical premium costs, union costs, and other benefits that their overseas competition don't have, along with the fact that some other countries (Japan) have government funding that lowers their per unit cost basis - all this allowing them to sell cars cheaper than the US car makers.

GM vehicles are just terrible. I rented one couple yrs ago, never again! The build quality was so bad there was a gap between the power window button where I could see wires inside...pathetic!

I was just in Texas last week and I got stuck with a Toyota truck for a rental. Needed to haul stuff for my buisness. Not sure why people are so impressed with them, it had very little power once you had a load on it and it used a lot of gas. Sure was happy when I got home and jumped back in my GM truck. Much more comfortable.

I beg to differ. I have had several GM cars and they were all great!

You will nver see GM, or Ford for that matter, file for BK. There is too much at stake once that is done in todays world. If they do, then ALL their vendors will be forced to follow suite. It would be a terrible domino effect and if you think the US economy is bad now... you wouldn't want to see it if the US auto industry went BK. It is a main pillar to the US economy. Without it we would be nothing !

Plus a simple BK would damage their name in many foreign markets which surprisingly enough is where both F & GM are growing and doing well... for what it's worth.

Agreed. This is probably the only reason the big three are still in business - rental and fleet automobiles. Many big corporations got out of the "company car" perk for their employees 10 years ago or more. Now it's mainly the rental car companies buying American.

I think GM relied to heavily on the SUV - and that's what has just put the nail in the coffin.

We looked into moving to Detroit last year. That place was depressing - I refused to live there. DH could have made more money there - but we picked Columbus OH instead. I am so thankful we picked right.
