Yeah fortunately I'm younger also. I've probably got 30 more years of working before I retire. At this point it's just entertainment for me. I check it daily to see what percentage I lost in the previous session.
I'm up 3% since January. Moved to stable bond fund last year when Bear bellied up.
That was my canary in the coal mine.
Yeah ... I did the same thing but I'm really annoyed because one of my bond index funds has lost some money ... not a lot but, it annoys me all the same since I got out of stocks the same time you did and bonds are supposed to be "stable."
So I've switched everything to cash. The next time there's a bear market I won't even chance it on bonds.
The value of mine went down about 32%. My company switched us to one of those investments that auto invest depending on what year you are going to retire. I still have a few years, but have been trying to figure out their website so I can see if I can change mine to a more conservative investment. Yeah I have a lot of years until I retire, but I still don't like risky investments. I'm very very very conservative when it comes to spending and saving.
nada 0%, I still have all my money and didn't lose a dime
I switched 100% to a money market fund last October when I looked at the Dow jones graphs and realized something really bad is about to happen.
This was when the subprime market just collapsed in September last year, that was the trigger to the whole thing... being prudent helps ;-) There were HUGE indicators present to make moves last year. Economists like Nouriel Roubini, Peter Schiff and even Bob Shiller have been saying this for ages but the general populace is not ever interested in hearing reality if it is negative. Many people had the attitude that "IT COULD NEVER HAPPEN" and some people still have that attitude. Sorry, but it just happened and there is much more carnage to come.
IMO, the market still has to correct around 20% or so... the Alt-A crisis is the next shoe to drop in the mortgage market. This is even bigger than the subprime mess and truly scary. Asset values are going to plummet. There is TRUE carnage about to hit. I used to work in data analytics for a Fortune 500 company, supplying market performance data to Wall St., and I have seen some of these projections first hand, they are just very scary.
Why do you think banks are not lending to each other or to consumers, because THEY know what is coming and are scrambling to preserve capital.
Mine hasn't lost anything, because I haven't cashed it out.
I'm glad someone realizes that. You havent lost anything until you redeem or sell your investment.
I work in financial services and hear people say I have lost $_____ , I need to take it out!
No, you didnt lost that but if you take it out then you did.
A gain/loss is unrealized until you sell it.
