There are things they can do..eliminate Sat mail and maybe go to 4 day delivery.
Keep the branch office open and let people come get their mail if they really need it.

Cutbacks are cutbacks..we can only hope they are reasonable.

I see more home foreclosures and unemployment. Is this the bailout the government is giving its citizens? This move is so anti Big Deal. Hail socialism for big business.

[quote=cpg35223;5924828]In my city, I really don't have a problem with the postal service. In fact, I consider the post office in our metro area to be top-notch. The counter people are friendly and well-trained. And if you mail something midday one day, it typically gets to a local address the next day, or the day after that at the latest.

Instead, I would argue that the problem is that today's postal service is the equivalent of a buggy whip manufacturer. Seriously. With the exception of a birthday card, a thank you note, or a party/wedding invitation, when's the last time you mailed a bit of personal correspondence?

And, on the business side, I e-mail all my invoices to my clients. Personally, I'm now toying with the idea of PayPal for my receivables, just so I can speed up collections.
In fact, I bought a roll of stamps two years ago. I haven't used it up yet.

So the Post Office's function is now essentially to deliver junk mail, bills, and magazines to our door. That's it. And, even then, it's struggling to remain a cost-effective advertising medium for marketers. [quote]

Very good points! I am working for a friend in her business and we fax invoices to a big client and the other client wants them emailed!!
The problem with the postal service is that there are not enough Management that can think outside the box and come up with a new way of doing things. How long since this financial crisis has the conversation been coming up to cut Saturday mail delivery?
I agree that I buy stamps too (a book of 20) and it last me forever! I pay all my bills via the internet, I only mail the one that wants to charge me to pay via the internet.

40,000 is alot people losing their jobs. Can you imagine getting your mail later everyday than you normaily do? Routes would be cut, longer on the street for delivery but who cares right? If anything happens in the neighborhood the mailman knows first. But don't forget who might of saved your life or any other family you might have, like one of co-workers did saving an elderly woman from passing away from a heart-attack. Who cares if your mailman is a veteran who has served his or her country and wants to keep providing to you each and everyday. Every year we pick up food for the needy and never get a thank you. I can understand why some people hate the postal service and they have their reasons. Just because we might mess up, doesn't make it our fault it get missed delievered or not even delieverd. More people at the umempolyement office? hope to see you there

None of the bailout were for the citizens. The bailout was for the banks and other corporations.

This is quite sad. I used to work for the Postal Service and I feel for the men and women working.

It really doesn't help at all considering that DHL pays the USPS to deliver most of their packages and DHL is going to concentrate on international shipping. Last quarter we lost billions of dollars and the mail volume is down 11% from last year. When fuel costs increase one penny, our costs increase over $8 million annually. Hopefuly with gas prices falling it will help us some but not much. Their looking at 3 waves of early retirement. If enough people retire they will not layoff at least thats what I heard today. IF they layoff its going to affect the people with less then 6 years of service. It really hits home to me because I'm one of them, Still a newly wed (2yrs) new home and a child on the way, I just hope I won't be in a cardboard box by then

You have my sympathy. You'll get through it. Just hang in there. I'm a father of 3 and I can tell you there are times when it gets tough but you have to be tougher than the times. Just after Christmas last year after I had returned from 2 weeks of vacation my manager told me my position was deteriorating and that I should probably start searching before the layoffs came down the pipe. I found something else making more money and with better job security. Get your resume in order and start feeling around for other things you can do. UPS? FedEx? Moving to another employer may be good for you.

Side note- I've always been an advocate of the USPS. I ship almost everything I can through USPS. I've got to go mail a package after work as a matter of fact.
