In the last two months I have bought:

Food
a rain coat

That's it.

What are you buying or not buying?

In the past two months:

Food (mostly basic as basic can get: wheat, rice, beans, milk, cheap(er) produce)

Shoe Goo

Two baby shower gifts and a birthday present, however I bought supplies to make gifts vs. spending a lot. I'll also spend postage this weekend to mail them.

A 3.99 toy at Goodwill for my son today. Splurge for the month.

We've cut back on everything possible.

ETA: Interesting thread. Stores are still packed here. Several friends are still spending away . . .

I'm avoiding most discretionary buying, partly out of caution and partly because I don't support Obama's economic ideas...

Food, no frills, baking and making and freezing. Some clothes (sweaters) at Goodwill (1.99 each). That's it. I borrow dvds and books from the library. That's my entertainment. I'll probably buy the laptop that I've been putting off for two years, but I"ve been planning and budgeting for that. Otherwise...just waiting out the storm.

I had to dry clean a suit..

I bought groceries..

I bought a CAT5 cable...

I paid my rent..

I paid for my cell phone and internet bill...

I paid for a crown reconstruction for $500 (the other half was covered by my insurance)

I went out to the fast food restaurants like over 50 times... (mostly lunch, otherwise I work through lunch hour)

I bought three plane tickets for a total of $1000!

I paid into my retirement plan... and I saved the rest

what else do you want? I am planning to buy Christmas presents but I hate buying presents cause you never know what they like and when you ask them, they ask for $1000...

We cut back a lot. We went to alaska this year because we had paid for it years ahead when the economy was better. This year we are scrapping all plans for vacation. My parents don't want to risk losing their jobs over a vacation.

We also eat less meat and more beans/rice. That is a good thing though because agrarian eating is better for you.

We aren't buying any presents since both me and my brother are older. We can't afford to waste money on stuff we don't need. We are sticking to the essentials at this point.

We cut back a lot on going out, a lot. Going out to eat only like one a month now. We used to go out every weekend. Not anymore. Can't afford it.

My mom bought a new car a couple months back. She bought a 12k toyota yaris that gets ~30 mpg. She could have probably afforded a 25-30k car but we don't want to waste money on trivial things.

We aren't even really in a financial bind either. My parents have like 2 years left before their home is 100% paid off. That means about 1,000 extra per month in free cash flow that can be spent on other things. They have little to no debt. However their 6 months emergency fund has nearly been wiped out from a last job loss a couple years back.

Still spending, although I was never really very spendy in the first place. Plus, I am in Texas and it just doesn't seem that bad here.

We are actually spending a lot and I can't wait until we are done. We are in the process of building a solar and wind generated house. We only spend on the house and our food. There is no frivolous spending like eating out, movies, DVD rentals, etc. Just the necessities but boy they are a lot right now.

When we are finished, and I do see the light at the end of the tunnel, we will hardly spend anything for living. Woo hoo. No more electric bills, yeah and hardly ant property taxes.
