Actually the part about using only US steel and iron had 3 exceptions.

1. If it wasn't in the public's best interest to buy US steel/iron.

2. If US steel/iron cannot be made in sufficient quantities or quality.

3. If it raised the price of the project by over 25%.

How much do you want to bet that other countries will show that their steel and iron is of better quality and cheaper so that the quantity can be there and we buy from them instead of the US because it falls into these exception categories?

I'm so tired of this "screw America, It's all America's fault" international mentality. Quick to blame us when there are problems or they don't benefit and quick to hold out the hand when they need help, but not so quick to help their own. Screw em I say. We've been tending to the world's problems too long, and we get slammed for that anyway. Time to tend to our own.

The irony is that one of the biggist steel mills in the US is owned by the Germans and the other is owned by the Russians!

That's what happens when you socialize America... you have to sell bits off to give handouts... what did you expect? Money doesn't grow on trees.. no matter what the Federal Reserve says...

Well now the US Chamber of Commerce is going against the "Buy American" as it doesn't serve the free trade in this global economy

Why is it so wrong for a country to try to help its citizens these days ?

U.S. business group works to kill Buy American plan - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090130/bs_nm/us_usa_stimulus_buyamerican_3 - broken link)

i agree that provisions should be in there about domestic production

as places look to stimulate their growth it makes sense to keep as much $$$ reinvested into the nation as possible

I know my home city (goodyear az) has recently put incentives in place for any city project to use businesses within Goodyear.

For example the local paper company in an office materials contract.

they have provisions in place to keep competative bidding relevant, while also realizing that by giving contracts to local employers they are gaining tax revenue off the sales while keeping local citizens a little more stable in their jobs

Usually those incentive say that anyhtign within 10% can be awarded to any company. Not 35% which is way over priced IMO.That is giving the contract to a higher bidder basically. This is a slippery slope IMO.

Nothing to do with employers using the money to "better America".
