Wish I knew. I have had many clever ideas that might have been patentable but never tried because of the (assumed) cost.

There are many free resourced online. But the bottom line is that most patents are drafted and applied for by a patent attorney. The average cost is $5,000 for a basic idea up to $20,000 for more complicated, high tech ideas.
You can search for "patent attorney" and your closest city to find a list of them. You should also contact your local universitity office of technology transfer to see if they can suggest some good local attorneys.
Two important things to remember:
1. Once you publically disclose your idea, you only have 12 months to file for patent protection. So you need to make sure to keep your new ideas secret. If you must share them, get the other party to sign a confidentiality agreement.
2. In order to receive a patent, it must be new, useful, and non-obvious. You must also know enough about the idea to make it yourself or tell someone exactly how to make it. For example, I have an idea for a flying car but I could not get a patent on it because I dont know enough about physics, electronics, etc. to make the car.

Tell your employer about your ideas and ask them to assist you financially in filing your patent.
I did that, and we started filing a patent for me and then the company decided to go on a cost-cutting spree and shelved the idea
I quit soon after that, so didnt get a chance to wait and ask them to pursue it further.
