Are restaurants still doing really well with their businesses despite the recession? A recent while ago at our local Dairy Queen there was a long line of customers and nearly every table was full, also about seven weeks ago I went to Red Robin at lunchtime and we've had to wait ten minutes just to get ourselves a table.

I don't think they are doing very well. We've lost Outback Steakhouse, Hooters, Rosters Sports Bar, and a high end restaurant called Corks. I notice shorter waits on Friday and Saturday nights.
It depends I think. In this area places that were doing well a couple years ago have seen a decrease in business but are holding on. The ones that were marginal are hurting or closing. High end places seem to be doing worse. It's also going to depend on the local economy, while unemployment around here has gone up it is still well below the national number.
It seems like many of the tried and true eating establishments (from McDonalds to higher end restaurants) are doing fine. It's the less known non-chain places who seem to be doing the most suffering financially....or face closing. Of course, Orlando has the advantage of a large population....PLUS a good amount of tourists....so I don't know if this is the same story in other cities.
In many cases there are too many of the same types of restaurants in one area and some of them wouldn't have made it even if the economy was terrific.
The original poster named typical middle class restaurants that are nothing special, so I would be shocked to see a decline. An abundance of food for a relatively cheap price well keep the poor happy.
I hear day spas are doing really well.
Restaurants' sales are down about 2.8% I think...
My girlfriend and I are still going out to eat like we normally do and we aren't cutting back on how much we spend.
It's mostly upscale places that are hurting.
Mid-priced sit down restaurants seem to be doing well.
