A tax cheat is a tax cheat. Nobody ever claimed that the rich weren't paying any taxes. The argument is that the rich aren't paying their fair share when compared to a lower or middle class income individual. This study backs up that theory almost completely.
A tomato is a fruit. Botanicall speakingy, it's a berry.
Hrmm, when is a cheat not a cheat. When I get a spoonful of ice cream at midnight...that's definitely not a cheat. No way, Jose. That's me, living the good life. Man, I bet rich people can have two scoops of ice cream and not feel guilty.
It's the nature of their income. A business owner running a cash business will significantly under-report their earnings. If those earning W-2's could do the same they would in a heartbeat.
Read the rest of the article for more info, but what it essentially says is that basically, those in the 6 figure range are not paying what they owe, on average. 6 figure employees would include Directors, Vice Presidents, Presidents, and some C-level employees at some companies. There are more 6 figure employees than there are millionaires.
Why would it be a surprise to see that the rich hide more of their income than the poor, who actually DONT HAVE ANY...
People in higher income tax brackets shouldn't have to be paying the rates they do anyway. So if they're hiding some of their income then good for them. Perhaps if the tax laws became more reasonable, I'd feel more vindictive toward them. As it stands, however, they are only taking into their own hands a problem which the government has failed to address (i.e. extremely unjust tax treatment).
EXCELLENT point! I don't consider myself rich but it makes me SICK to see what is taken out EVERY pay period and then the government has the nerve to DEMAND MORE. This is the time of year I HATE with a passion!
If I could find a way to get away with it and not feel quilty about it - I would cheat.

This quote is a perfect example of the fraud triangle. If you had the opportunity and the rationalization, you would cheat. You already have the incentive.
Instead of cheating though (which no one should do regardless of circumstances) why don't you become politically active in advocating a fair tax system? I personally would like to see a flat tax (and I am an accountant who would not benefit job market wise if the flat tax was introduced.)

I agree. I think this is why folks DO cheat. Personally, I consider myself to be honest and could not sleep if I did cheat, even though it kills me to think that the government continues to ROB my family.
I love the idea of the Fair Tax. Listened to Libertarian talk host Boortz while living in ATL and agree pretty much with what he suggests. Can't seem to find him now in Columbus, OH. Think I remember he is on a Dayton station.
Anyway, I have heard of these Tea Parties that are going on today regarding the flat tax. Need to do some research on the activity locally. And in regards your job, I am in the same boat, too. DH works at an accting firm in corporate HR. Kind of a tough situation, huh!
FairTax makes sense if you look at the big picture. The reason it's not larger than where it is, has to do with the fact that people don't want to pay higher prices on things. What those people don't realize is how much more money they would take home, resulting in more money to buy things at higher prices - with the difference being you choose whether or not to buy said things, resulting in financial management as a given. But people don't want to hear about conservation - thus, the FairTax won't go anywhere and people continue to get ripped.
The other thing about FairTax: When you see MTV Cribs and some of these yokels with 5 Hummers, you'll know that they paid their fair share of taxes on each and every one of those vehicles if they were bought new. We can't say that today, and that means there's a problem.
Since the richest 1% pay like 90% of all taxes, I would say the biggest tax cheats are those who pay no taxes because they either don't work or don't work enough.

ah Comrade Revelated. the thing is that the government has lost the moral authority on the tax issue. the way they squander our money, prop up the corporatocracy, infringe on our civil liberties and enter into unlawful/ disgraceful wars i'm not surprised that people cheat on their taxes. in fact i would encourage people to cheat and cheer them every step of the way!
The wealthy prople I know personally, pay more in taxes then the the anti-rich crowd ever dreamed of earning. If they would spend more time trying to find ways to make more money than worry about those that do they would probably be much happier.
