Can't afford to do for others, but spend extra $$ on an electric bill? Sure! No problem.

I think I'm just irritated this morning. One of the neighbors came over last night and COMPLAINED because we have "too many" decorations as he has always placed 1st in the neighborhood contest before this year, and now he "has to" buy more lights this year, it's "our fault" and he really just can't afford it because he's been out of work for the past 10 months.

Umm... then DON'T do it!
Wow, thank god I'm Jewish.

I hope you laughed at that jerk! What a moron.

Sales were down for the last two months. People may have been saving up for Christmas to clear room under credit lines. As usual, stores started to get crowded the weekend before Thanksgiving week.

We were watching the local news reports in the afternoon. The malls appear to have mostly cleared out by mid-day. There's also two less big box stores this year. Circuit City and Linens 'n Things are both gone.

that was an interesting article. i wonder if the truck driver got his deals. it would have been interesting if they followed up to see if people got what they were trying to find.

this is definitely a bargain driven sale period. i feel sorry for parents with children who want that hamster! every year there is some "must have" toy that the parents are running around trying to get and i guess the hamster is this year's "chosen" item for the kids.

Personally I don't give a rat's tail about White Friday (yes I know I said the opposite term on purpose). Just a day where people act like fools to grab stuff that may not be such a great deal after all. Like some of the other posters in this thread I do alot of my shopping online too. Less hassle, and no issues standing in long lines.

I think the only thing I would want for my Christmas present, is something that I will have to save up for. I would like a better laptop with a wide screen and updated specs, but the kind I want I have to save up for. No local big box store will have what I want in that area. Personally I will be glad when the holiday season is done with.

I already bought my biggest Christmas present for this year several months ago: a new 2009 Pontiac G6 to replace my aging 84' Oldsmobile (I still use it to do local errands though as it still runs very well).

Actually it retailed about 21K, but due to all of the rebates and discounts they were offering at that time, plus what I put in for down payment my price came to about 15K. Not too shabby I think.

Default Drop How You Shop

Story in WaPo by a shopping expert whose thesis is: "Our spending can't drive the economy forever. Let's leave the malls behind."

Excerpt:

- The current way we measure the health of our economy, from the markets to consumer confidence ratings, depends on our overspending. But, simply put, we cannot continue to be a country where more than 70 percent of our economy is based on consumer spending, especially when that spending is based on credit.

No kidding. I've been disgusted for many years by the annual orgy of commercialism and always bought a small gift for family and friends at high-end craft fairs, such as the Sugarloaf series of shows at Gaithersburg, MD.

But there's only so many catchy items that crafty types can cobble together so these days we send a specialty food item to family. Now that the nieces and nephews are out of school, we've taken them off our list, only siblings and parents are on the list these days.

I kept my word. Not going to do any shopping this weekend. January will be the time for real bargains. Not leaving the house at all, I need to clean out the pipes for my winter garden.
