This is a tax that was instituted during the Great Depression to raise money to help pay for the WPA, CCC, and other works programs. It stayed in effect until about 1966 IIRC. My Economics texts are downstairs and I don't feel like going and getting the exact dates.

I seem to recall that the US had the world's most robust economy and BECAME the financial center of the world in that time.

I have no idea who Mitch McConnell is nor do I care.

As for your tax, better get out those books and brush up. You know just enough to think more of yourself than is warranted. Do your homework then get back to me. If I feel you've been serious then I will enlighten you as to the ramifications. See, unlike you, I really don't care. Tax or no tax I will live like the god you claim to be. In fact, an even bigger god. A god of gods so to speak.

This sort of thing is already happening in the United Kingdom. They have all the problems that we do here in the USA but they don't have the ability to export debt as we do because the pound sterling isn't much of a reserve currency.

Pre-Budget Report: Alistair Darling unveils plans for bank bonus supertax and pay cap for public sector workers | Mail Online

So they just slapped a pretty good tax on the bankers, traders, etc in their financial industry that is sucking blood from their economy like leeches. Unfortunately the UK is in a pretty bad way. It doesn't get much coverage in the USA because 1. Their solutions make sense, 2. It's a sign of what is headed this way in a much bigger form.

I don't think they added a trading tax in the UK. But their socialist anyhow so what does it matter? Plus their screwed.

Perhaps captialism isn't for you. Moving is always an option.

If we had capitalism in the USA, Wall St. would not exist now.

Great idea! Make it a double barrel tax, by taxing the giver and the receiver at a the rate of 200% and get the g*dd*m special interests out of the government.

There are much better things to tax, like implement a national property tax.

Taxing financial transactions will do nothing to prevent any problems in the financial sector, financial institutions need to be able to fail.
