lmao joey! I do know what you mean unfortunately. I live in a small town so competition can be fierce but everyone expects me to go out and get a minimum wage job which doesn't work when they ask for my last salary.
No one wants to hire a former small business owner. I can't even get the local supermarket to let me bag groceries. I'm "too risky" WHAT!!
Does anyone else feel guilty for not working so long....and completely demoralized by the endless number of people who denigrate "us" for sitting on our butts because "we can't be bothered". I'm not too proud to scrub floors or pour coffee. Give me a chance to make an honest buck....I'll show up early.

gracie
Thats the same boat I am in.
Part of the problem is that many folks see on your resume that you worked for yourself and automatically assume that you are hiding something like a termination.
The company my daughter worked for for over 20 years shut down and left her on the curb. A nation company that you ahve all shopped at, Poof.! Gone.. A college degree and plenty of experience, and not so much as a nibble since.
She is now looking into going back to school and get into a field where jobs are plentful, namely medical.. I read in the paper the nurses at the local hospital just got a 19% raise..!! Most people are concerned about a job, and they get 19% raise..! That's huge. I don't think I ever got more than 5 or 6% at one time.
One downside to going to school, you have to hope they still have a need when you get out of school. I remember a few years ago there was a teacher shortage, so you go to school for 4 years, and when your graduate, all the teachers are being laid off... Life never gets any easier...!!

Guilty? What on earth for? For getting laid off from a company I busted my butt for and knew for a fact people doing less were making more? For watching my savings leak away faster than water out of a colander? Hardly.

Sorry, you lost me on that one too. As for "sitting on my butt" while technically true, I'm sitting at this #$@ PC all day because looking for a job is a full time "job" in itself. Looking for openings, applying, tweaking resumes, follow-up calls, etc etc. And it doesn't exactly pay so well.
I haven't noticed/heard anyone "demonizing" but if they did, they get the bronx salute from me. This wasn't my idea.
