For those of you who have experience advertising with the Yellow Pages, do you feel like you are getting your money's worth?
It costs you hundreds or thousands of dollars a month to advertise and you have to sign on for a full year. If the ad doesn't generate the money that you spend on the ad, why continue? do you feel like you need it?
phone book ads.... one of my personal peeves. I despise having to be in the FOUR main books in our area. It all started when they deregulated the phone companies. There was a time when there was one book that served an area.... now with deregulation, there are half a dosen or so. that doesn't take into account the hundreds of "internet yellow pages" that call you, mispronounce your company's name and swear they have been your provider for years.
But, given our type of business, we have to be in "the book" we compromise with an in-line ad. Our business is established. We laugh at the big flashy, full page ads... because the next year we see the same company with miniscule blips.... if they even survive at all.
Ohhh and the salespeople... I understand they have a job to do, but they do not like to work within a budget... they always want you to go to the next tier.... or add color... or have a secondary listing.... it never ends.
WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! Good if you cater to a senior or geriatric niche. Like, nursing homes, surgical supplies, hearing aids, maybe antique appraisal. Other than that take your dollars to the internet.

Most business owners Ive know abandon yellow page advertising after trying it for one contract length.
I think it's the thing we use when we take our 3 year old to a relative's house and forget her booster seat
Seriously, though, I run a handyman business and I don't bother with a yellow pages ad. Most of my business comes via craigslist or word of mouth. I'm not raking in money, but I'm doing okay this way, and without the $375 ad the yellow pages tried to sell me.
