I read an interesting article about our business world and economy recently. It said that without an elite group of Americans who have incredible intellectual, create and business skills we would be living in a Third World type financial existence. 99% of American workers are basically grunts who just do the same routine tasks over and over and over every day. These grunts (which I am one!) are the backbone of our society. But without the unique talent of certain key members of our society (10,000 elites) who bring incredible talent to business, medicine, research, the creative arts and education, America would be no where. It takes a person with the wisdom and creativity like Steve Jobs to create and maintain Silicon Valley. Or because Julia Roberts was born and got into the movies, billions of dollars were spent by movie makers creating thousands of jobs.
The average grunt worker is important but not as key to our society and economy as the 10,000 elites. If they were not born and did not exist we may be living like the people in Africa. Agree or disagree?

Transport these alleged elites to France or even Canada and those countries with their rigidly government focused methods of allegedly trying to "manage" things would snuff the life out of any creative thoughts.
Give me in exchange the 10,000 brightest Frenchmen or Canadians (or Swedes or Dutch or Portugese or Brazilians etc) that have not yet been totally smothered by their overly paternalistic governments and the returns to those 10,000 immigrants and many more is nearly limitless...

it is absurd not to give the credit to ALL the workers who have built this country, served this country, and protected this country. they have formed the base for the system, from which the ideas have been allowed to flow freely, and NO country has allowed more ideas to flow than the united states.

I agree, but both sides are essential to the team. A football team needs both talented players and great coaching to win the Superbowl. The American workers drive to achieve over the last few hundred years has been unequaled in history, but give a little credit to the "managers" who created the ideas and set the goals that the workers have realized and met time and time again. It takes both types to make a winning team.

You were making a credible argument until the inclusion of Julia Roberts into the 'elite' list. Come on....does the actor create the industry, or does the industry create the actor?? Take away JR and you have multitudes of other ditzes who want to be rich and famous for pretending to be what they are not.

No your sources discount the Wage Tax, which the rich DO NOT PAY, but you, I and your employer do.
It's an interesting concept but I would also agree that this number is MUCH higher than 10K "elites". Entrepreneurs are essential to the American economy, they are the reason why this nation has prospered. In order to create jobs, one person much have a vision of something and work toward that goal.
The perfect example would be Warren Buffett with Berkshire Hathaway...which I'm currently in Omaha attending the meeting tomorrow and went to the stockholders reception tonight. Truly an amazing event, it goes to show how one man can build an empire and a loyal following of people who ascribe to be as successful as he is. One simple idea can create fortunes at the drop of a hat.
I disagree. They say because an individual Movie Star have a certain appeal and charisma this encourages people to choose going to the movie as their choice of leisure activity. Because someone like Julia Roberts is in a movie investors will fund the show and thousands of people are employed as a result. If she did not exist the movie would not be made and the people would not be employed. If the industry could not find the next Julia Roberts the movie industry will falter.
It is much the same in the business world. If new very talented business leaders do not appear in the future our economy will fail. We need leaders in all fields to make America strong. Worker Bees are important but they can be found under every tree.

It's true that the "Idea people" are what made this country great, but they were replaced by greedy self serving people that value wealth more than anything else. When they stopped treating their workers(grunts) as valuable assets and looked at them as disposable items they opened the door for government to step in to close the gap.
For the last 30 years average pay for workers has stagnated. With off shoring jobs or bringing in cheap foreign labor many once good paying jobs have been either completely eliminated, or the pay rates drastically cut. This hurts everyone. When too many workers are forced into jobs that pay only enough to survive the entire system will collapse, as we are experiencing now.
A rising tide lifts all boats, but it doesn't rise from the top down, it rises from the bottom up.
