I grew up in Western NY where we always had a February Break from school, usually corresponding w/President's Day...
We haven't lived in the area for quite a long time now and as a child, I just thought it was another vacation and have learned that it was an "energy conservation" week, to help reduce the heating costs,etc....
We live in an area that doesn't have a break during that time, and I have a friend who insists that EVERYONE gets a February break who lives where it snows.....
I am not sure about that, I know people who live in many places where it snows that don't get one?
So,where do you live and do your children get a February break?
We did not get a February Break in Chicago and it certainly snows there. They got Winter Break around Christmas time and Spring Break around Easter time. Oh and near NYC, we did not get a break in February when I grew up.
Yeah, we had 44" of snow and our February break was the snow storm! We don't get ANY break except at Christmas. A long weekend in February and Good Friday and Memorial Day. Those are the scheduled "vacations" for the January to June months. It's grueling and painful to not have a break.
I too grew up and taught in a state that provided parents, teachers and students with time to travel or vacation at different times throughout the year~when I took my present position, I was shocked to learn that there were no scheduled weeks except Christmas to New Years. The one compensation, is that we are out by the 10th of June, so we have a long summer, until we go back 1 or 2 weeks before Labor Day.
Just the long President's Day weekend; some years both Friday and Monday. Lots of people out here use the time to go skiing. Also the teachers; my kids have run into their teachers at the slopes!
We had them growing up. They called them "energy breaks". Basically they were to save energy so the schools could turn everything off or down. I wish we had our "spring' break in Feb vs March like everyone else so you could go somewhere and not have it crowded.
Kind of. My younger dd gets a 4 day weekend and my older gets a 3 day weekend. So there is a day or two off but I don't think it has anything to do with conservation of energy. Spring break is late this year. I think they thought the kids needed a break.
Maine- yes- always had (and do have) a week off in February (and another in April). Never heard about it being an energy break... I don't think they really shut the school down too much- they still have to keep it heated, which I assume is the biggest energy expense...?
