Anyone experience with AmeriCorps? Pros or Cons? Does it really make your resume look better?
I apply AmeriCorps through YouthCARE (MN), and I was wondering if it'll improve my resume by 20%-40%? My resume does not look that "interesting" since I do not have a lot of experience. I finally graduated from college, so I am willing to look into interns/volunteers to improve my resume over the years.
Did a different, but similar program, myself, and yes, a year spent volunteering post-college has been a asset to my resume and a talking point on interviews even years afterward. That wasn't why I did it, though.
I believe that any volunteer experience is important on your resume because it shows you're willing to put yourself out there for a greater purpose and/or think outside of yourself. Not only that, Americorps is a widely recognized, legitimate operation. I've volunteered at a couple of programs that were administered by Americorps, and enjoyed both experiences. I personally think it helped me on my application to grad school.
As a very fundamentally shaping life experience, I can't speak highly enough about a year of volunteer service post-baccalaureate. It's definitely something that has piqued employers' interest, and more importantly, it provided a great deal of very useful experience (and contacts) that has helped immeasurably in later ventures.

Even in a good economy, AmeriCorps absolutely makes your resume look better. But in this one, when for so many grads there are no jobs in their field, or only very poor ones, a year or more in public service gives a much better impression than a year working for a temp agency or as an assistant manager at the Gap Outlet.
Thanks a lot. I applied and I hope I get the position. I hope AmeriCorps will do it.
