Should rainbows be banned in schools? - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/theweek/20110610/cm_theweek/216154 - broken link)
Quote:
A Canadian high school says the colorful symbols of gay pride are too politically charged to be displayed on campus. Really?
St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School in Ontario, Canada, has banned rainbows, after 16-year-old Leanne Iskander, founder of the school's "unofficial" gay-straight alliance (official gay clubs aren't allowed), displayed the multicolored motif at an anti-homophobia event. The school maintains that the symbol is simply too politically charged to be displayed on campus. Instead of backing down, Iskander and her fellow students went undercover, baking rainbows hidden inside cupcakes, using colorful batter that was only revealed when the treats were pulled apart, and selling them for 50 cents each. They wanted to donate the $200 they raised to an LGBT organization, but the school insisted that the cash go to a Catholic homeless shelter, and is sticking with its anti-rainbow stance. Is this rainbow ban fair?

They are a private school in another country. Guess they can do what they want. I, personally, think schools should stick to teaching academics and stay out of the social justice issues. I don't know how Canada is doing these days, but if its anything like the States, kids can use all the academic focus they can get.

But isn't it silly? Rainbows are rainbows even when they are a symbol of LBGT pride.
Oh, btw, Catholic Schools in Canada get tax money and thus are not truly private anymore.
I agree. Banning the rainbow is just hilarious. Better outlaw the prisms too! And those kids better never have recess on rainy days, might see one!
I did not know I was waving the freak flag when I colored those rainbows in first grade...think I used glitter too..the carnality of it!..
I don't think I have ever been to a grade school for more than ten minutes without seeing a rainbow.
Well, the funny thing to me is that the man upstairs invented the rainbow, so it makes me think He is down with it.

They need to get rid of purple cranyons and paint ...get rid of red and blue too(necessary components of a rainbow).
Take all of the works of Gay Talese out of the library. Burn those Marvin Gaye records in music class.
Triangles have to go....goodbye trigonometry and geometry.
I bet high schoolers struggling with math will love this!
Oh, c'mon! A rainbow is a feature of nature! Kids love rainbows.
I agree. A rainbow does not have nearly the same level of symbolism as does a cross. The school can do whatever it wants, but it seems like they're making an awful lot of fuss over a non-issue. Sometimes a rainbow is just a rainbow. If, however, they are REALLY concerned about it being "politically charged," they're certainly doing that part to give it more meaning than it would have otherwise!
I'm glad that their academic instruction is going so well that they have all kinds of time to focus on trivialities unrelated to education. Were I a parent, I'd be fairly annoyed at the undue focus on social and political statements, and consider finding a different private school (assuming I were anti-public school, anyway) that sinks that same time and energy into academics.
