I was responding to the idea of kids pitting themselves against each other...from YOUR post....
Oops, you are right. But I guess what I mean, or what I think, is that if the kids are pitting themselves against each other, that's a whole other critter than if the teacher does it in a mistaken attempt to motivate the students. Some kids are very motivated by competition and others are made almost catatonic by it but many more are motivated by competing with themselves to see if they can do more or better than they did last time.
