Please make suggestions about a book (elementary school, grade, science, good)

I am wondering if anyone out there knows about some comprehensive book for elementary school 2nd or 3rd graders. This book should contain fundamentals about reading, math, social studies and science. Can you make a recommendation please? I'd like to get one or two as a gift for my friend abroad. Many thanks.

What about the classic series, What Your X Grader Needs to Know?
