Hi,
I am beginning to tutor a 5 year old Korean boy tomorrow in English. He has not yet entered Kindergarten (he just turned 5 this month) but he does go to preschool. His mom says he speaks a few words of English, but that's it (mom doesn't speak the best English either.)
Our first session will be in a few days, but tomorrow night I am going over to meet him and his family. Other than introducing myself and finding out some of his interests, what should I do during a "meeting you" visit that I'm not charging for? I think I'd like to do some sort of vocabulary pre-test with him, but I want to make sure I go about this the right way.
I have been a 3rd and 5th grade teacher in the past, so I have the experience in the classroom. However, most of my ESL students spoke Spanish, which I also speak. I don't know a word in Korean, so I can't go that route to make things any easier. Any other suggestions for tomorrow night, other than what I have already?
