I've always heard lotto money was for schools. If that is the case then where is the money?

I don't think it usually is. At least here in Ohio, they're definitely lying about it. The education budget here is set no matter what revenue the lottery produces. So technically, yes, lottery money is given to education, but then that exact amount is subtracted from the education budget and moved elsewhere. It's really all a big sham so they can say that the lottery helps pay for education.

Maybe lottery money should be expressly earmarked to teach kids about probability.

In South Dakota they shoved Vido Lottery down our throats in the mid 1980's claiming that it was primarily going to education.

The approx. $ 90 million that they shake the populace down annually goes to the General Fund where there is a per pupil payment to schools of approx. $ 5000 a student. So yes, indirectly much of that money goes to schools and for the daily function of the government as well.

I don't mind the scratch ticket lotteries sold at convenience stores (has everyone gotten their mega millions ticket today?), but these video lottery casinos are a blight on our entire state. For every three "casinos" there's a pawn shop or quck cash title loan place. I look upon the owners of these establishments as crooks.

In Tennessee I think it goes to scholarships. They are called "Hope Scholarships". some of the profits also go toward road construction.

Where I am it supposedly goes to funding pre-k and college Hope scholarships. Yet they keep slashing the budget for those programs in spite of the huge lottery sales we have had over the past few years.

This is the way the state gets the lottery passed--never telling us the money is NOT extra, but a way to divert the original tax money to other departments.
Just another scam and fleecing of our taxes.

In Colorado the lottery is for parks, recreation and open space. They're very upfront about it.

I don't know about Texas but in Missouri it turned out to be the biggest scam ever pulled on the public of Missouri.

While some of the lottery money went to the schools by a possible small increase of funds, it allowed the politatians in charge of the previous school money to be spent on their own pet projects. Most of the school's increased funds were used by the administrators. Little went to the benefit of the kids or teachers. Just my opinion of course but if you search it out as I did, you will probably come to the same conclusion.

That is what they do here. Interestingly enough the odd bedfellows of liberals and social conservatives fought off having a lottery for a long time. Ultimately they lost, but we were the last state to legalize it.

In Pennsylvania, the lottery is supposed to benefit older citizens. Pennsylvania Lottery - Benefits Older Pennsylvanians. Every Day. I've never played it and don't pay much attention to it.
