It demonstrates to me that she has brains but no common sense.
Who would have thought the word "hell" would cause so much controversy....it shouldn't have, not when she was addressing a room full of adults like herself, if she's lacking in common sense, then the ones with-holding her diploma are lacking even more.
Um, she won't apologize? Why not? Even in Oklahoma she could get away with the insincere Hollywood/Washington "if I offended anyone I apologize..." bit. And in fact, she may very well have offended some people. This hill ain't worth dyin' for, honey.
Years ago, I watched former Attorney General Janet Reno recount a story of a hurricane battering a house in Florida that her mother had built. She said she told her mother "Lady, you built one heck of a house!". I know damn well that Janet Reno would not normally say "heck" but she managed to censored herself on television (which I thought was a bit much). Then again, maybe her mother was so religious that she really said it that way. Now, if Janet Reno can censor herself, why can't a high school girl?
Why apologize. It's just a piece of paper and she does not need the paper. She has already started college on a full scholarship. No one will ever ask to see her high school diploma. No one has ever asked to see my college diplomas for that matter.

I'm with ya on that, Nana! Seems to me this is just a small-minded Principal who wanted to get his name in the papers and so he did. The college received her HS transcript long ago.
I do think this is pretty ridiculous on both sides.
Who cares if she said hell.
However, the school is just asking for a written apology. How hard is it to just write...
Dear School,
I apologize for saying hell instead of heck.
Regards,
There you go. Game over. No money spent. No public outcry. Who cares. Does everything always have to go to the supreme court? (Yes this is exaggerated, but this seems to be our mindset these days.)
A long time ago, if the teacher caught us swearing, we would have to write on the chalk board, "I will not swear at school again" a few dozen times. If a student didn't, they would get paddled.
