School asks deaf preschooler to change his sign language name

Some of the dumbest things they do in school today

Don't do this
Don't do that etc. etc. etc.

Then the child is ...

Three-and-a-half year old Hunter Spanjer, who is deaf, signs his name by crossing his forefinger and index finger and moving his hand up and down.

To his family, friends and those who know the Signing Exact English (S.E.E.) language that the Grand Island, Neb., boy uses, that gesture uniquely means "Hunter Spanjer."

But to Hunter's school district, it might mean something else. The district claims that it violates a rule that forbids

I realize that things have changed considerably since I went to school, but I can't recall any changes being made in human anatomy, especially as it pertains to the digits of the hand. The forefinger IS the index finger.

The video of the news story didn't play well so I couldn't really determine what, exactly, the motion is to which the school board objects. But my take is - somebody needs to get a grip!

ETA: I did manage to get a better video and I think the whole thing is ridiculous. It smacks of "I was only following orders" and we all know where that can lead.

IMO, schools are taking things WAY too far. This is how this little guy learned to say his name and it is an approved sign through S.E.E. so what is the problem. I saw the video and the sign and I don't see an issue. How would you like it if you went to school and the school said you needed to change your name?

Maybe they also don't like that his first name is "Hunter"--too violent I guess.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Add this to the long list of public schools' stupid overkill rules.

Zero tolerance = abdication of responsibility.

If the adult adminstrators shrug their shoulders and simply refer to "Rule 27-J" then how do they expect kids to learn responsibility?

Yeah, that's appropriate.

In the case of the article, the "cure" is worse than the disease.

Yep three year old deaf gangs starting up in Nebraska, it's an epidemic. There is nothing more understanding and beautiful then the deaf community.

Someone slap the teeth out of these admins and slap a discrimination lawsuit asap.

I wouldn't even consider that "caving." More like "Wait, aren't we idiots? Now the world knows what idiots we really are. Shoot, better fix that."
