Technology is taking over. Eventually, textbooks will all be online.
When I was in highschool, we were given our textbooks in the beginning of the year to keep home.
Thank God because I remember some sort of 20/20 or nbc news piece (circa 1998-99?) about the unhealthiness of too many heavy books.
Since Middle school my Son does not have any Text Books. They have classroom sets, and few in the library that can be check'ed out for the term, or as needed. (He had a few 'workbook' type books in ES).
All his books are up on the school portal as PDF's .
It's interesting that many districts don't have money for books. As a result, the teachers/districts often "borrow" pages and mass produce them on the copier. Many also scan the copies and post them on teacher/school web pages.
I teach 5th grade...and we have classroom sets of textbooks that don't go home. They take their workbook pages or packets that I put together for homework. My class also buys a lot of books from Scholastic. They take books home and also leave some in their desks to read in class.
