Math/Algebra is probably the toughest subject for many students. Many seem to be failing at it. Students face many, many distractions in this era. Does anyone else see the possible link between the increased use of pot and the inability of many students to learn algebra and advanced math? Certainly not conducive to learning new things. It may not be so bad after someones understands fundamentals but usually is not the case.

No it is not

All true. And those prone to difficulty are generally known before leaving 2nd grade.

You have to do better than this.

Doesn't make much difference.

Prolonged, heavy use does have some effect on the brain. Simply not enough time for the prolonged part to kick in, however. Short form communication and the trained inability to concentrate has a larger impact imo. That's not necessarily entirely a bad thing, either. Kids today can juggle multiple things far better than I could (early millenial).

No, I do not believe marijuana usage has much to do at all with the difficulty many students have learning algebra.

You have to do better than this drivel.
And it has absolutely no connection with teen dropout rates and unwanted pregnancies of many students, huh.

Denial is not a river in Egypt. Truthfully acknowledging a problem takes insight and courage. It is the first step in taking pro-active measures to take a sensible approach to solve a problem. Science will not do that for you. So why do you think there are so many American students who are so bad at math? Most can't even make or count change. Obviously there is not one reason but many contributing factors. Pot abuse is one, and a big one undoubtedly.

No, but I do think there's a link in falling scores and the fact that many Americans VOTE DOWN FUNDING for our school systems at every election. It's like our failing infrastructure. Our roads/bridges are in disrepair not because they are driven on too much but because we don't maintain them....much like we fail to maintain a high standard for education and back that standard with ample funding.

The weed cuts through the overall boredom we've given them in the form of outdated/underfunded "school".

Been there, done that.

Correct.
And every single one of these reasons existed LONG before that teen ever used any pot.
Let alone abused.

Pot abuse is...
An entirely separate matter. And rather rare.

Nope

I see the public demanding more math classes for HS graduation, then expressing shock and outrage that the percentage of teens who can absorb ever-higher levels of math isn't increasing.

But that's just me.

It has to do with more not caring than it does of them not being capable. Pot is HARDLY a justified excuse.

You say there are "so many American students bad at math".. Are you trying to say they all smoke pot? I smoked pot in high school, got B's, and did better than plenty of non pot-smokers. In fact, some of the pot smokers were some of the sharpest kids that just didn't apply themselves as much.

It has a lot to do with school and parents as well. Look at the divorce rate in our country. If you think that growing up in two homes, or with one parent, doesn't impact your children in tons of ways, including school, then I don't know what to tell you.

I would feel confident saying that I think that divorce and issues with children's lives at home is more of an issue for kids than pot smoking is. Of course, there's people popping out kids left and right, not married, with people they don't know well enough, etc. Selfish and not fair for the children who didn't ask to be brought into that kind of environment.
