A few years back, our district redrew the boundary lines and what was previously a school that only drew from a few select neighborhoods (all of which happened to be upper-middle class) now drew from a much larger geographic area...which I'm sure would have been fine, except for these new neighborhoods were much more racially and economically diverse. Oh, the horrors to have your children attend school with brown/poor kids...

Now, if we're talking less-controversial redistricting, usually it is fine. Especially if their friends are going.

It's going to vary by school system so it's going to be hard to answer your questions, but many have tried.

My oldest son was redistricted to a newly opened school in 8th grade. It was pretty seamless since all his friends also went as well as many teachers from his former middle school.

Redistricting happened here very frequently due to growth. The school system opened a new school every year for 19 out of 20 years.

Time to get some counseling on this long ago issue. Perhaps some before you entered that middle school would have helped too.
