If your son or daughter learned in their middle school world history class from a class handout that said that "Medieval Crusaders went to war “for religion,” just as modern terrorists do today," what would you think about it?

I would agree. The statement, although over-simplified, is correct.
It is correct, but only partially so. The real problem with that wording is it somewhat legitimizes terrorism by equating them. Rather the issues with the crusades should be studied based on the crusades and the geo political environment of the time and let them stand or fall on their own rather than the subtle justification that terrorism is ok because of the crusades.

Intetesting that I saw the flip side. Both were wrong may be the message being communicated.
Depends on whether the "for religion" in quotes was fleshed out further. Without knowing what else was on the handout, it's hard to comment on one cherry-picked line.
It's oversimplified, just like the statement that modern terrorists are doing what they do for religion.
