I am looking for information that I can share with my kids 19 and 20, both girls. Both are in college and one of them asked me, how do I get a checking account? I know they are gonna have a lot of questions before they move out.
Is there a dvd that we can watch together, that explains important things to know when starting an adult life?
This might help Money Under 30 - Simple, Honest Financial Advice If you use these key words, "financial basics for young adults", you'll see lots of information on-line. Really the best thing would have been to have them open a checking account before they started college. We tried to find banks that we could access (physically) from our home and our kids colleges. Each of our kids had their own checking accounts (we weren't on them) but we were able to deposit checks if we really needed to. One of my kids had a mandated class on financial literacy in college that proved to be pretty helpful now that he has some money to save and invest.
For pity's sake, hand the average twenty-year-old a smartphone and she'll find out the size and shape of a mole on her favorite singer's behind in fewer than two minutes, but going to a bank or credit union website and reading the instructions for how to open a checking account is somehow beyond her ability? I'm all for helping a kid get her financial footing, but sheesh! Anyway, Toobusytoday brings up an excellent point about college personal finance classes. Have your girls look for one and take it. Wish more high schools offered personal finance, but I guess better late than never.
