This might be a "get off my lawn" post, for all I know. I worked at a K-6 school a couple years ago, and noticed some of the 40-something teachers with 1990s-era tattoos (the tribal stuff) showing through their shirt sleeve.
I guess my issue is, with the increased popularity of larger tattoos that cover entire body parts, tattoos visible in professional settings will escalate in a few years.
Should there be any reservations against people with visible body art teaching in public schools? Is it okay as long as it's reasonably hidden? Or is it inconsequential?

If the teacher pulled into the school lot on a Harley with ripped jeans and a cutoff shirt, tossing the roach aside from the smoke just enjoyed, put the little silver flask back in the pocket, and walked into the classroom with two full sleeves, would I worry? If the same person pulled up in a Mercedes, looked and dressed professionally, walked out of the car with a briefcase and into the classroom with two full sleeves, would I worry? Just more superficial chatter about something itself that has nothing to do with the job at hand.
Simple answer - no objections based solely on tattoos.
What does a tattoo have to do with how one performs their professional duties?
Also, are you so naive to believe that every child on the planet has never seen a tattoo?
How many of those children's parents have tattoos?
I've seen administrators go after teachers because of the shoes they wore so going after one because of tattoos would be within the realm of possibility from my experience.

This. A great teacher and tattoos have nothing to do with one another. I had a very interesting calculus professor in college (20 years ago) and I will remember the way he dressed to this day. He was balding and wore an ineffective combover, combined with loud partially buttoned Hawaiian shirts which failed miserably to hide his incredibly hairy chest. He paired the shirts with wrinkled khakis and his feet were clad in Jesus sandals and crew socks. He was a brilliant math professor, although not a fashionista. Unfortunately for me, I only got to experience his mathematical wit and wisdom one semester, because I failed his class
