When I lived on Long Island I loved the Jewish holidays. It meant traffic on the LIE would be much lighter. :-)

New Years Day falls on a Sunday so they give the next work day off.

I had never heard of Rosh Hashanah, and had to look it up. How to they schedule it? The Jewish calendar is a lunar calendar, so it's a different day every year, right? Like Ramadan?

See post above mine regarding "practicality".

I'm sure the quite few Jewish families who have children attending these public schools don't find it "pointless".

Back in the stone ages of the 1970's and 80's when I attended public school on Long Island, we certainly did have the High Holy Days off. You know what? We also learned Christmas carols in music class, and had Columbus Day off as well.

I'm sure you can find something edumacational to do with your kids on these days off.

Or, why not enroll them in a school that doesn't close for days that you don't approve of?

Yes, the dates of Jewish holidays vary from year to year. However, it's not rocket science to figure out the calendar.

I know. But the OP isn't complaining about their kid being home on a day that means nothing.

Are you sure about that? I would imagine South Florida and LA have larger Jewish populations than Baltimore.

Yup, apparently LA, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area, Chicago and Philly have higher Jewish populations.
