For me, When the awards committee was discussing who to put where, we had a big school so there were a lot of choices, there was an award that came up and EVERYONE looked at me when it was announced, i was unanimous choice for 'shyest'. Here's the thing, i was probably 3rd or 4th 'most quiet' in the senior class, there were kids so shy nobody even knew they existed, so with me, i was kind of the 'popular shy kid' that people had actually heard of and knew and liked, i knew i was going to win this even though i knew of kids that deserved it more.

At the time, i felt it was an insult and went home and told my parents 'i got voted shyest and i'm kinda pissed about it" and my mom said "take the award because years down the line, you'll be happy you got into the awards category in your yearbook" and you know what? she was right, i'm glad i just accepted it and didn't make a stink.

What i DID do is wanted to 'prove' that i wasn't really the shyest, so i exploded in a rage and was the most 'boisterous' person in the entire school, i made it a point to be the most outgoing kid there, i went crazy to 'prove them wrong' i even overheard one person say inquisitively "he's the shyest? how did that happen"

any good 'yearbook' stories?
My H.S. doesn't do this. Instead, we answered several questions (career goal, hobbies, people/things about H.S. will be missed, etc.) and the yearbook staff chose what to have printed based on allowable space under pic. I guess when one has a H.S. graduating class of several hundred students...it's tough to conduct opinion polls.

Many schools have moved away from Senior Superlatives in the yearbook.

I was expelled from the entire district on my 16th birthday so I never had a senior class yearbook.

Somebody actually signed my 9th grade yearbook by saying "Since your going to be dead by 20, lets hook up this summer!"

Started college at age 18 with a 9th grade education & a baby.

And I graduated; which about 0.002% of the US population manages to do, under the same circumstances.

Oddly; I've been approved as a member of my H.S. Alumni for the Class of 1986 which would have been my graduating class but I've never attended any events.

Great job turning your situation into a positive. Why were you expelled at 16? Was it difficult to get your GED?

it wasn't a physical award, it was just that you got 'famous' in the school for being in the yearbook in a 'category' with your name vs just being in the class picture. I think i remember it as being a big deal at the time.

I don't remember how big the class was, maybe 200? It did seem like 'everyone knew everyone' and the 'yearbook committee' decided who went where in what category. I guess with the more PC nature of the country, maybe schools are getting away from this, but i'm out of touch with what schools are doing now.

I did not, but I attended my 40-year hs reunion two weeks ago. Small class of 119, about 50 came. In attendance was a man and a woman who didn't know each other well in high school. Both moved out west, and a few years ago connected through facebook. They fell in love, and so they were elected Class Couple 2016 at the reunion! Informally, of course, after a few drinks had been consumed.
