I feel that "we are a nation of immigrants" cannot explain our present immigration policy. What has changed? Why did the feds give up the "melting pot" idea. Is there really an American Way of Life?

While the United States is a melting pot, there has always been policies with various restrictions on immigration. Ever heard of the Chinese Exclusion Act?
