If you're of a certain age, you can probably decipher the following Roman Numerals with ease:

XVII
XXIV
XIX

maybe even these:

CIV
MMDLIX

But what about today? Do teachers even teach Roman numerals any more?

Well, since the NFL still designates the Super Bowl using Roman numerals, that first batch you listed would probably be deciphered by most pro football fans.

The second group looks a little tougher, but movie buffs might be willing to take a stab at them.

Don't know, but if they are, the kids are not learning them!

I can just picture a student walking into the library stating, "I need a book about King Lewis (Louis) ex vee eye eye eye."

ha, I was going to say the same thing about Super Bowl, my son was motivated to learn Roman numerals from that, at least to start with, then he just found it interesting, like learning a secret code.

I don't remember what the 'D' stands for.

When I was taking some courses in the 80s the computer room had a push button combination lock with Roman numerals. The Chinese students could not get in. LOL

Curriculum can vary by state, but I'm not sure if any state deems it important enough to spend time on.

I never learned it growing up. I can decipher most double digit numbers, but it can take me a while. I'm in my mid-30s.

I=1
V=5
X=10
L=50
C=100
D=500
M=1000

and any lesser figure preceding a greater figure subtracted that amount from the greater figure.

I home schooled and taught my kids Roman Numerals (not super in depth though!). Like most concepts, unless practiced or reintroduced, it is quickly forgotten! I did see on it on the Georgia Math standards (Common Core maybe?) for 4th grade math -- in a task called "Super Bowl Numbers". So there you have it! Going the way of cursive writing in the school systems - taught briefly and not reinforced so not mastered and most likely forgotten. Although, I must say, we don't encounter Roman Numerals as much as cursive writing. As far as cursive writing, IMHO, you have to be able to sign your name and also be able to read the cursive writing of others. But that is all. Just my two cents -- for what that is worth LOL!
