Useless (for me anyway):
- Geometry
- Chemistry

Useful:
- Typing, now known as keyboarding

History teaches people to think and presumably trigonometry does not? Strange!

I consider it to be the reverse. History mostly shows people's failure to think.

So what does this say about how students should be steered better towards and away from courses?

Anyone who thinks they don't use algebra on an everyday basis isn't all that bright ...

Economists don't. They left out Durable Goods Depreciation in the Net Domestic Product equation.

It's either that, being bluntly ignored if you try to converse with him in English, and get a glazed-over look if you speak to him in Dutch.

Useless: Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry. If you don't have an aptitude for math (I sure as heck don't) those courses are only an exercise in frustration and futility. I passed them all by the skin of my teeth and have very little recollection of any of the subject matter.

Everything else is useful in that it contributes to being an education person and learning about the world we live in. You may not 'use' American History but it is an important subject in the USA.

Agree... In Belgium and France, many are unable/unwilling to speak to you in English, hence your French is useful. In Germany and The Netherlands, they seem to enjoy practicing English, even if you want to speak German or Dutch. The Dutch speak better English than many Americans.

One another thing I learned from foreign language study: English grammar.

I was forced to learn grammar rules/terms and how they differ between languages. My HS English teachers barely touched on grammar. Thankfully, it was covered in foreign language classes.
