Is it just about getting the degree - any degree? The paper? From any accredited college regardless of the quality and rigor of the program, or the competency of the graduate holding that degree?

Or is it about acquiring the knowledge and skill set expected from completing the requirements for the degree - as a minimum indicator for future successful job performance? Then there are other avenues that may be better for those whose talents and skill sets are not optimized by attending the traditional 4 year college.

It may vary depending on the degree and job, but any student taking on massive debt to go to college (any college, regardless of quality of the program) thinking it will guarantee a job leading to a comfortable lifestyle, needs to seriously consider all of their options.

Good jobs requiring just any degree may have been more prevalent in the past, but that is rapidly drying up. The degree in and of itself is no longer a viable avenue for gainful employment for most, especially when coupled with the significant increase in costs (tuition, room and board, and lost potential wages from being out of the work force) associated with getting that 4 year degree form a traditional college that the student will need to repay.

Why do so many jobs require non-essential degrees that have little to do with actual job requirements? Perhaps because there is such a glut of degreed people that they can get away with doing so. Now, more people are pushed to financing "worthless" degrees in order to just have access to these jobs that have little to nothing to do with their specific degrees. Jobs they could have performed without first having to pay at times exorbitant tuition. And how long will it be, once more and more folks have degrees, before employers feel they can raise the bar even higher in certification requirements, just because they can?

And the cycle continues.

Life skills are learned from one's parents, from living a wide-ranging life, from making mistakes and hopefully learning from it, from myriad sources that can be gleaned from outside of a university.
