I am beginning to explore the possibility that I might have a learning disability. It is difficult to write about it, I'm not sure that I can. I'm older (late 30s). I've never told anyone.

catrinac, you'll have to be a little more specific. What kind of learning disability? Is it something that can be fixed with practice?

My daughter has a learning disability. It's nothing to be ashamed of. There are tests a psychologist can give you to diagnose a learning disability and they can help you work with it.

I teach Learning Disabled students and I suspect that my brother and I had learning disabilities that were never diagnosed. LD wasn't caught as often decades ago as it is now. People can be taught to adjust to LD but it doesn't go away when we become adults. I don't know where you live but there are psychologists that work with adults with Learning Disabilities. It si nothing to be ashamed of. The sooner you get a diagnosis, the faster you can get help.

I know of a very successful businessman who was diagnosed late in life with ADD. He actually read an article about ADD and could identify with much of what was described. This knowledge has been of benefit to him. Many people can go through life with ADD or an undiagnosed learning disability. They become very good at covering up their problem so others won't guess. I admire you for facing this issue and it sounds like you are looking for help with this. Recently I came across a nonprofit organization called Learning Disabilities of America. I don't have any background on them
but you may find further info on the web. There are professionals who can assess your type of disability and offer you further assistance. Good luck.

Good luck catrinac--I didn't find out that I have ADD until I was in my 40's. It's never too late to discover your new self.
