This discussion is kind of a spinoff from the homework thread. There, a lot of posters were saying that they didn't think homework was necessary or they just barely did homework.

So, I'm wondering what people consider to be their goal in school and what is acceptable as far as grades are concerned.

I don’t know that I can choose one answer. It would vary based on effort mostly. For example, if my child worked hard for a C that would be ok. If he slacked off and got a C, then my opinion would be different.

I think it would also vary by child.

I have to agree with tgbwc, I always told my kids to try their hardest if that meant a C and they could look me in the eye and say they tried then that was fine.

So, if you think they could get a B if they studied a little harder, then you wouldn’t push for that?

Would you consider hiring a tutor?

How would the child “study harder” if he already tried his hardest?

Yes, I agree with this. A child may sail through one type of discipline (music, or foreign languages, or literature), and struggle, putting in extraordinary effort, in another (math, or whatever). A kid who worked hours every day and still got a C, shouldn't be told that's not acceptable.

There is no "studying harder", if the child is already putting in 2 or more hours/day on just one subject, trying to get the math problems to come out right, or whatever, comparing answers with a friend, going back and re-doing some of the problems, and still not managing to get into the "B" range.

A tutor? If all parents of struggling kids took this route, there wouldn't be enough tutors in town, and probably 60% of HS algebra students would need tutors. And don't forget; not all parents can afford to pay a tutor.

We knew our kids and if they got a C on a test I didn't need to line up 6 months of remedial but we also accepted that they would do better in some courses then others. I didn't beat them up to have straight A's in everything with a weekly psych meeting to handle the demand.

And yes if needed we got extra help usually from the teacher after school or from us, we didn't have a situation that needed a tutor.

It depends on the child. One of mine is a consistent A student and that’s what we expect from her. The other is a solid B and occasional A student, but if he gets a C every now and then I’m not crying about it. If either was consistently performing below their ability, I would and have acted on it.

By high school, you have a pretty good idea of what your kid is capable of. You make your expectations accordingly.
