Many jobs have elements of 'corruption', whether you personaly choose to exploit that avenue or not is your option.
Even 'skilled trades'... auto / applicance mechanics illustrate that often. Some construction companies have been known to intentionally reduce time, material, and cost of a project to fill the bonuses of senior management. Bridges collapse, equipment fails, people get hurt (or killed).
A 'Full Service' fuel attendent often makes referrals for auto service / tires ... some of those suggestions may save your life, others may not be legitimate and prey upon the customers. I haven't seen a fuel attendent under my hood (bonnet) or checking out my tires for 40+ yrs. YSMV

A lot of that post is akin to conspiracy thinking.
Did a little along the way, but not much. Self-service was already growing by the time I graduated high school. But in that era, I knew several people who did work at service stations. They didn't just pump gas but worked on cars and a few drove tow trucks. Pumping gas was just one of the tasks that came with it. So yes, if I had been a car guy back then who loved working them, then pumping gas would just have been part of the job. Had a couple friends in high school who were good at it, but I wasn't interested in being a mechanic, so I went a different path. Of course, now days the old service station is gone.
Just so you can know, a few other what you consider menial jobs I did growing up included working with my dad when a ran a garbage truck. As well as helping him paint propane tanks for extra money. Did a little bit of burgers during high school. But mostly working on what was left of what had been the farm. You know what I dreamed about going around and around cutting the pasture? That how cool it would be to do that at a place like Biltmore or Disneyworld where people would think what beautiful lawns and gardens.
Of course there is only so much time in life to pick things you want to do and you can't do all of them. I'll have to be satisfied with my lawn and garden. But when I'm on the mower I can still pretend. Hey, I'm not the Verger at St Peters at least.

Old folks can go to college (or trade school) too.
Dolly Parton, the rhinestone-covered songbird recently nominated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, adds to her philanthropic track record with a new free college program for employees of her Tennessee amusement park, Dollywood. Starting Feb. 24, seasonal, part-, and full-time employees at Dollywood are eligible for free college from their first day of work.
Currently I'm studying "The Stoneworker's Bible", in hopes I can build my own stone retirement lodge and a few arched bridges!
I should have apprenticed with my FIL, fortunately my spouse served many yrs as a hod carrier for dad.
A. What's wrong with pumping gas? It's honest work.
and
B. Other than New Jersey, where can you find a full service gas pump now days?
NJ somehow made it mandatory...........In my opinion if you aren't bright enough to pump your own gas then maybe you aren't bright enough to drive a car!

Had all the stonework I wanted years ago. Painting rocks white, raking sand, and such to pay for my free college.
